Bovilis Cryptium - A New Vaccine to Reduce Crypto Infection in Calves
June 2026

Preventing Cryptosporidiosis (Crypto) in Calves

Cryptosporidiosis (Crypto) is a leading cause of severe calf scours, particularly in calves less than one month old. Infection commonly results in diarrhoea, dullness, and poor growth.

Once established, Crypto is very difficult to eliminate from calf-rearing areas. The parasite spreads easily, survives for long periods in the environment, and is resistant to many disinfectants.

Even with good hygiene and management, calves can be exposed in the first few days of life—making prevention and early protection critical in any effective calf health programme.

Why Early Protection Matters

Calves are most vulnerable to Crypto from birth, when their immune system is still developing.

Early infection can lead to:

  • Severe diarrhoea
  • Dehydration and reduced growth rates
  • Long-term production impacts
  • Failure to reach full potential

Concurrent infections with E. coli, rotavirus, and coronavirus are also common, making disease more severe and harder to manage.

Because treatment options are limited, the focus must be on:

  • Reducing disease severity
  • Supporting early immunity
  • Preventing exposure where possible

How Bovilis Cryptium Works

Bovilis Cryptium is a maternal vaccine given to pregnant cows and heifers during late pregnancy.

It works by:

  • Stimulating antibody production in the dam
  • Transferring those antibodies to the calf via colostrum
  • Helping reduce diarrhoea caused by Crypto

This provides calves with protection during their most vulnerable early life stages.

For best results, Bovilis Cryptium should be used alongside:

  • Strong colostrum management
  • Good shed hygiene practices

Correct Vaccination Timing

To maximise effectiveness:

Primary course:

  • 2 doses, 4–5 weeks apart
  • Second dose given 3–12 weeks before calving

Ongoing programme:

  • Annual booster
  • Given 3–12 weeks before each calving

Bovilis Cryptium can be administered alongside Rotavac Corona vaccine.

Colostrum Management – The 3Qs

Effective colostrum management is essential for calf protection.

Follow the 3Qs:

Quality

  • Use first-milking colostrum (gold colostrum)

Quickly

  • Feed within 6 hours of birth

Quantity

  • Feed 10–15% of the calf’s body weight

Ongoing Hygiene in the Calf Shed

Because Crypto survives well in the environment, maintaining hygiene is critical:

  • Clean and disinfect pens regularly
  • Keep bedding dry and fresh
  • Minimise calf exposure to contaminated areas
  • Isolate sick calves where possible
