Sedating Heifers for Teat Sealing: A Safer, Cleaner Approach

This season, we introduced sedation for heifer teat sealing on-farm in Cambridge, Waikato. Initially implemented to improve health and safety, we quickly discovered additional benefits including cleaner procedures, calmer stock, and improved efficiency.

If you’re planning your heifer teat sealing programme in New Zealand, here are some practical insights from our experience.

How We Sedated Heifers for Teat Sealing

We used an intramuscular injection of Xylazine, ideally administered while heifers were in the race before entering the shed.

For best results:

  • Allow 10 minutes in the yard for sedation to take effect
  • If administered in the shed, allow extra time before starting

Within minutes, most heifers:

  • Urinated
  • Became noticeably drowsy and relaxed

This resulted in a much smoother and more controlled teat sealing process.

Cleaner Teat Sealing Process

One of the biggest advantages was improved hygiene during teat sealing.

Because sedated heifers were calmer:

  • Less urinating and defecating occurred in the shed
  • Many animals had already voided in the yard prior

This significantly reduced:

  • Risk of contamination
  • Wash-down time between rows
  • Personal cleaning between animals

On several occasions, we were able to complete the entire job without any defecation in the shed—a major win for efficiency and infection control.

Calmer, Safer Heifer Handling

Sedation made a noticeable difference to animal behaviour and staff safety.

We observed:

  • Less slipping or falling in yards
  • Reduced jumping over rails
  • Minimal kicking, stomping, or striking

Heifers:

  • Moved more slowly and calmly
  • Rowed up more consistently
  • Were easier to handle throughout the procedure

While some drowsier animals were slightly slower to row up tightly, this was easily managed with gentle encouragement and did not impact workflow.

Importantly, sedation gave us confidence to:

  • Fill full rows
  • Work more efficiently
  • Reduce stress for both animals and staff

Time, Cost and Efficiency

Sedation cost approximately $2 per heifer this season, but we found the benefits largely offset the expense.

Efficiency gains included:

  • Less cleaning downtime
  • Reduced product wastage (e.g. kicked teat seal tubes)
  • Less need for restraint (e.g. tail holding)
  • Faster handling and sealing per animal

Overall, sedation contributed to a more streamlined and productive process.

Final Thoughts: Is Sedation Worth It?

After a full season, sedation has proven to be a valuable tool for teat sealing heifers.

Key benefits:

  • Improved staff safety
  • Better hygiene and biosecurity
  • Increased efficiency and workflow
  • Reduced animal stress

While every farm system is different, our experience in Waikato was overwhelmingly positive.

If you're planning your next teat sealing programme, we recommend discussing sedation options with your local veterinarian to determine what’s best for your herd.
